Fullmetal Alchemist is a series that's near and dear to my heart, and a lot of it comes from its protagonist. On the surface Ed is just another hotblooded shounen hero, but it doesn't take much to see that there's more to him. He's one of those characters who simply never gives up, no matter what. Yes, he's brash and loud and an absolute handful for all of his loved ones, but Ed is utterly devoted to them, and to his ultimate goal.
The title of this site is of course a reference to the mythological Icarus, and was chosen largely because of Ed's speech to Rose at the start of the series. I've always been struck by those lines (especially since Amestris doesn't exist in our world), because they say an awful lot about Ed himself. However...
Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew.
It's the same when love comes to an end,
or the marriage fails and people say
they knew it was a mistake, that everybody
said it would never work. That she was
old enough to know better. But anything
worth doing is worth doing badly.
— from Jack Gilbert's "Falling and Flying"
I don't actually know that most of this poem applies to Ed, but it's certainly food for thought. I ultimately chose the site name because I've never been able to shake the connection between the two, but I prefer to see it in a more positive light. (Might change the name in the future though.)
