fan remixes & arrangements

If you thought there were a lot of compilation albums, it's nothing compared to the number of fan remixes of FFVI's music. Since its release in 1994, FFVI's music has been one of the most popular in the FF series and in video game music overall, and fans have been rearranging it in every style under the sun. On OverClocked ReMix, a website dedicated to free video game remixes, FFVI is one of the most remixed games on the site.

Because my focus here is on FFVI and not the FF series as a whole, this page focuses only on FFVI-specific albums, not fan albums featuring music from multiple games. However, you can find a full list of fan albums on VGMdb's list (just filter for fan arrangements), and if you'd like my recommendations, feel free to drop me a line. If you know of other FFVI-specific albums not listed here, please let me know.

Some of these albums are availble for free; others are licensed (giving money back to both Square and the arranger) and cost a small fee.

Listed by release date. Tracklists are not provided; since these are full albums you can visit the linked sites for tracklists.

Tracks: 17, on 1 disc

A piano album available on Bandcamp. I really enjoy it, but then I love piano albums. I'm also always here for an entire album based on FFVI. I have simple needs.

Final Fantasy VI: Balance and Ruin

Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Arrangers: OverClocked ReMix
Catalog #: OCRA-0040
Length: 6:05:26
Tracks: 74, on 5 discs
Release Date: 2 July 2013

I could rave about this album for days and it still wouldn't do it justice. If you don't already know about it, head over to the website and start downloading it — it's completely free. This album is six hours of the FFVI soundtrack reinterpreted into a vast number of styles, each one better than the last. There's no way to pick a favorite; they're all amazing. A look at the tracklist will show you that every single song from the original soundtrack is represented, plus a bonus disc of extra arrangements.

To put it in perspective, the FFVI soundtrack is my favorite of all time, and this album comes close to matching it. There's no higher praise I can give. I could suggest half a dozen songs for you to try out, but really, you should just download the whole thing.

As mentioned above, OverClocked ReMix hosts a ton of free video game remixes, and their FFVI section is one of the largest on the site. Take a look through the FFVI remixes and you'll find a ton of high-quality FFVI arrangements.

Final Fantasy VI: Acoustic Rendition

Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Arrangers: Eiko Nichols
Catalog #: N/A
Length: 1:05:28
Tracks: 22, on 1 discs
Release Date: 20 March 2013

This is a recent album, but one that's very well put together. As the title indicates, it's an acoustic album, and it has a really unique sound; I haven't heard anything quite like the versions on this album. You can listen to samples and find links to buy it on the official site.

That's all of the FFVI-specific fan albums I know of; if you're aware of more, please let me know about it. Otherwise, why not check out the playlist?
