Final Fantasy XVI, yet another entry in the long-running Final Fantasy video game series, was released worldwide on 22 June 2023. Set in a dark fantasy realm where magic is scarce and those in power can summon the might of godlike beings known as Eikons, it follows the story of Clive Rosfield.
While at first FFXVI takes pretty obvious inspiration from Game of Thrones, it doesn't take long to come into its own. What sets FFXVI apart, even within the series, is its use of Eikons. Humans known as Dominants can summon the power of the Eikons for their own, and in so doing wield ferocious power. It stands to reason, then, that most ruling powers in FFXVI's world, Valisthea, are themselves Dominants or otherwise associated with one. These Eikons take the form of the franchise's typical summoned beings — Phoenix, Shiva, Titan, Garuda, Bahamut, Odin, Ramuh, and the mysterious Ifrit.
The firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria. Though all expected him to inherit the Phoenix's flames and awaken as its Dominant, destiny instead chose his younger brother Joshua to bear this burden. In search of a role of his own, Clive dedicated himself to mastering the blade. His practice pays off when, at just fifteen years of age, he wins the ducal tournament and is dubbed the First Shield of Rosaria — tasked to guard the Phoenix and blessed with the ability to wield a part of his fire. Alas, Clive's promising career is to end in tragedy at the hands of a mysterious dark Eikon, Ifrit, setting him on a dangerous road to revenge.
Since FFXVI is very much Clive's story — he is the game's sole playable character and the character whom the story revolves around — to go into further detail would spoil the plot. I do recommend the game, as much for Clive as anything else; Clive makes for a really compelling protagonist in a very interesting world and the game is a ton of fun to play.
