Vanille (and later Fang) were some of the characters I was most interested in as information about Final Fantasy XIII came out prior to its release, but I didn't know much about them past what they looked like. Between the Japanese and English releases, I noticed that there was an influx of fanfiction for the Fang/Vanille pairing, which put them on my radar for the game. I expected to find them interesting, if nothing else.

What I didn't expect was to fall completely in love with their dynamic and how much they care about each other. I ended up being motivated to play the game largely to find out what their story was, and I was really satisfied by the way it ended up in the first game. I'm less satisfied with their narratives in the sequels, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the first game.
