Katamari Damacy was originally released on the Playstation 2 in 2004. It's a difficult game to describe, because there's genuinely nothing else like it. You play as the Prince, son of the King of All Cosmos, and you're tasked to rebuild the cosmos after the King destroys all the stars in a drunken stupor. You do this by creating katamaris, clumps of random objects that you obtain by rolling into them.
From the description alone, it doesn't sound like much, does it? And yet Katamari Damacy is a beloved cult classic. It is a truly bizarre game: you start out very small, rolling up household objects, and over the course of the levels and the game itself, you slowly roll up more and more objects. The final level involves rolling up virtually everything in order to rebuild the moon.
But perhaps the most striking thing about the game is the music. It's a truly eclectic mix of Shibuya-kei, electronic, and jazz. Don't take my word for it, listen to the soundtrack yourself: Youtube, Spotify.
These days, the easiest way to play the game is via the remaster, Katamari Damacy Reroll. It's available on most modern consoles and PC.
