I don't remember how I heard about it, but I saw Your Name in theaters — I'm reasonably sure I saw the subtitled version, though it's been a long time so I'm not positive. I had seen several of Shinkai's previous films, and while his work is undoubtedly beautiful, I really hadn't liked any of his films for their stories. They were very pretty, but had no lasting impact on me.
Imagine my surprise, then, to end up crying my eyes out by the end of Your Name. This was everything I'd ever wanted from a Shinkai film: gorgeous animation, fantastic music, and a plot I actually liked. Now, am I going to tell you that Your Name has a realistic or sensible plot? Absolutely not, it's absurd. But that doesn't matter to me at all. The emotional core of the film hit, and that's all that counts in the end.
