As a starting option in the very first Final Fantasy, red mage has been part of the series from the very beginning. The core identity of the class is that it wields magic from both the black magic and white magic schools, but cannot use the most powerful spells in exchange for their versatility. A red mage will never be a powerhouse spellcaster, but is often unparalleled for utility. Additionally, later games introduce the other signature flair of red mages: the ability to cast two spells at a time. The typical look of a red mage is a red cloak or garb and a red cavalier hat.
Red mage appears as playable option in many of the games, most notably those with full job systems such as Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. In Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV, red mage (often shortened to RDM) is a class usable by the player character.
